1. Warhammer Fantasy Battle House Rules
- Shooting - units obstruct line of sight - either as soft or hard cover, depending
on the type of shooting. If it is determined to be hard cover, then any misses because
of the hard cover will hit the unit that is obstructing.
- If a unit is engaged in the front, another unit may charge the flank if it
can reach it.
- Units on hills can fire with two ranks.
2. Experimental House Rules
2.1 Archer Volley Fire
Archers in formation, (does not apply to any archers in
a skirmish formation, or crossbows, etc.) have the OPTION to use volley fire.
-
To do this, nominate a target that is NOT in short range and within range
of the shooting unit. If the target can be seen by the
shooting unit, then place the large (5" diameter) template directly on
the target. Note the target does not have to be a unit, but must be
VISIBLE to the shooting unit. Eg, a spot on the ground, a tree, etc, following
normal line of sight rules.
If the target can not be seen by the shooting
unit, then you must guess the range (as per standard range guessing artillery),
then measure the range and place the template at that location.
-
Then, make a single 'to hit roll' using the BS of the 'leader' of the unit, this may be a champion,
a character that has joined the unit, or if none are present, the base BS of the
unit itself. If this is a 'hit', then the volley does not scatter, if it is a miss,
then it scatters 2d3 inches in a random direction.
Note that all modifiers apply to this roll except for cover modifiers.
-
Once the final template location has been established, count up the number of
models wholly under or touching the template. Roll to hit using the ballistic
skill of the shooting unit a number of times equal to the lesser of the
number of shooting models or the number of models under or touching the template.
Note that all standard bonuses and penalties for ranged shooting apply to these
rolls to hit.
For example, 20 archers are shooting at a unit. They miss and the template
partially covers 2 units, 9 models in unit A and 4 in unit B. In this case,
9 rolls to hit are made on unit A and 4 on B.
If there were only 7 archers, then 4 rolls to hit would be made on unit A and
and 3 on unit B. (This is not exact, but good enough for now, ideally the
ratios would be kept constant)
NOTE: each model
under the template gets rolled to be hit for ONCE; if the archers
outnumber the unit they are shooting those archers do not get a roll to
hit, for example, if there is only one model they are shooting at, a
unit of twenty archers will only only roll to hit ONCE for that one model.
Rule for large targets: However many small bases can fit in a large
tagets base is the number of "rolls to hit" caused on a large target.
2.2 Big Units Run Just Like Little Ones
Extra combat result bonuses will be given to units that have a 'squareness'
as follows:
| squareness |
bonus |
| 5x5 |
+1 |
| 6x6 |
+2 |
| 7x7 |
+3 |
| AxA |
+(A-4) |
This is to encourage having 'big' units. And to prevent a big unit
from running after just starting combat. The squareness refers to
the biggest square that can be drawn within a unit, so a unit can be
6x7 or 6x8 and still get the 6x6 squareness bonus.
2.2.1 Option 1
The bonuses listed in the table apply directly to combat result at the
end of combat (as listed above). The 'squareness' is measured at the
start of combat.
2.2.2 Option 2
The bonuses only apply to help 'tie' the combat. They can never
'win' the combat. That is, if a 7x7 square unit has lost a combat
by 2 (calculated without considering the squareness bonus), it will
apply 2 points of its 'squareness bonus' in order to render the
combat drawn. If it lost by 4, it would apply its squareness bonus
of 3, but would still lose the combat by 1, resulting in a decreased
chance of running away. If it had won by 1, then the squareness
bonus would not apply at all.
2.2.3 Option 3
Forgo the 'squareness bonus' entirely, instead, give a bonus to be
used as listed in Option 2 as follows:
| # of models |
bonus |
| 25 |
+1 |
| 35 |
+2 |
| 45 |
+3 |
| 55 |
+4 |
| 65 |
+5 |
The maximum bonus is +5.
2.3 Choo Choo Train Units
In order to encourage wider units, whenever a unit is engaged in a
combat on their front rank, if it has unengaged models in its front
rank, then it may immediately lap around a number of models equal to
the number of unengaged models in the front rank as per
the 'lapping around' rules in the warhammer book.
