Ok, so I'm a sinner, I got back into WoW, playing only with my buddies, it is fun after all. I'm ashamed to admit it, but it's true, I'm not going to get addicted though, I'm not going to get addicted, I'm not going to get addicted...

I've also tried out a couple other games (including a good emulator):

I finally got Bluetooth Dialup Networking working with my Cingular Treo... awesome!!

To duplicate: use the guide here: treo DUN guide
For cingular, I used the username/password here (you may be able to get it from your phone too): http://shadowmite.com/HowToDUN.html

I had to uninstall/reinstall the drivers for my IBM Bluetooth 2 PC card though, since I couldn't see the 'bluetooth modem' in the list of available modems.

Sweet...

WoW addicts...

Do not heed the siren call of the WoW-beast, encouraging you journey ever further down the path of 'level-up-ed-ness'. See as the beast dribbles the faintest hint of sweet 'level-up-juice', and how you suckle so greedily for every drop.

This is the mark of addiction!

This is the mark of sin!

Do not give in to your sins my brothers! Join me and fight for your emperor! Many enemies are at our doorstep who must be defeated in vicious combat, for they will not listen to reason and they will not submit. I was once like you, brothers, once suckling at the teat of the 'level-up' beast. But I was shown the good path, I was shown that I was suckling at the teat of a money-making machine of mediocrity, and I freed myself from the subtle, yet constant dribble of addiction that clouded my mind and my soul.

What happens when there are no more levels to 'up'? No more items to obtain? No more quests to do? Have you achieved more than others? Or have you walked down a carefully constructed path from which you may not deviate? Why surround yourself with facades and illusions of glory when there is no permanence? no accomplishment? Knowing at any time, all you have achieved can be taken away by your dark god, blizzard, and the only thing you will be left with is the polluted memories of your own heretical experiences.

Join us and free your soul from its bondage. You have strayed, but I believe you can return!

If you are ever on a jury, remember that you are there not to determine if a person is guilty according to the written law, but guilty of 'natural' crime. That is, unjust laws can be nullified by a jury.

However, an attorney may or may not be allowed to inform the jury of this power, as decided by the supreme court, so juries have power they are often not aware of!

advice for PhD students. Also an interesting subject on which to do more research:

Question: I am working in theorem proving, and one of the most important papers is your paper Simple word problems in universal algebra [KB] from 1970, written with P. B. Bendix. I have two questions. The first is, do you still follow this area and what do you think of it? And the second is, who is and what became of P. B. Bendix?

Knuth: This work was published in 1970, but I actually did it in 1967 while I was at Caltech. It was a simple idea, but fortunately its turned out to be very widely applicable. The idea is to take a set of mathematical axioms and find all the implications of those axioms. If I have a certain set of axioms and you have a possible theorem, you ask, does this theorem follow from those axioms or not? I called my paper Simple word problems in universal algebra, and I said a problem was simple if my method could handle it. Now people have extended the method quite a lot, so that a lot more problems are simple. I think their work is beautiful.

Here's an interesting quote I found on slashdot:

That's precisely the kind of thinking that makes crashes possible. When everyone believes something is a safe bet, they discount risk more and more. Market phenomena often work themselves out over decades, which is beyond most people's attention span.

Take stocks for example. From 1980 to 2001, stocks were the right place to be. When a trend lasts that long, it changes people's attitudes. In 1980, most people were very nervous about stocks, because they had spent the previous couple decades sucking.

If you bought the Dow Jones in 1929, you had to wait until 1956 just to break even. And this isn't such a rare outlier. If you bought in 1966, you didn't break even until 1983. Once you include taxes and fees, it was more like the early 90s.

It takes a while for attitudes to shift. Despite the bubble popping, lots of people still believe that their 401k is going to grow at 7-10% per year. That's not necessarily true anymore.

America's economic fundamentals are troubling. We actually spend 5% more than we make. With no domestic savings to fund future growth (or even service our existing debts), we're dependent on foreign investors. And the foreign investors are getting very nervous as the dollar continues to slide.
